MOVIE | SHAZAM! (2019)

"Say my name!"

Shazam! is a story about Billy Batson (Asher Angel) who suddenly encountered with a wizard (Djimon Hounsou) and gave him his power. This power changed him into a superhero named Shazam (Zachary Levi). I have to say I don't know much about the story itself, or the character. This is the first time I heard about the character. So I was very excited to see this movie when I watched the trailer for the first time.

It was hilarious! The humour in this movie was the thing that I'm most surprised the most. This movie was focused on the life of Billy Batson who figured his past and also the current time with his new self as Shazam. It was so funny whenever he and his roommate, Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer) tried so many things to find out Shazam's power. There were so many references to Superman and Batman, this movie probably a new addition to the future DCEU movie. Although I have no clue if DC still doing their extended universe or just throw new movies with their characters. We'll see.

Zachary Levi as Shazam is fantastic! He embodied a 15-year-old boy so realistically and while I was watching, I could see both Asher Angel and Zachary Levi personalities in one body if it made sense. I felt like they represented each other very well. The gesture, the way they talked, they're literally the same person. One thing that made them different, when Billy Batson was in his 15-year-old body, he was shyer and calmed. But when he was Shazam, he had more confidence and I'd say more comfortable to be himself. I'm not going to spoil anything, but I think it has something to do with Billy's past and his current state. Being Shazam was a really good deal for him to find himself.

For the past few years, I didn't feel connected to DCEU movies as I connected with The Dark Knight trilogy by Christopher Nolan. Mostly, because of the lack of depth in each character and the carelessness of the production, but for Shazam, it was pretty good. I felt connected to his character and the others as well. I love how the foster home that took Billy in, was the most loving with most charming characters ever! It was so easy to like each character in this movie.

I have some issues with this movie. Mainly toward the ending of this movie.

The villain, Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong) was kind of lame. He was angry about one thing that happened in his childhood and spent the rest of his life trying to make it right? I mean, I get it he had a shitty dad and an older brother but we never saw how his dad was being so rude or anything. Just one night and that's it. So I felt like the villain had a very little to no motivation at all to be a bad guy. It was so different from the other villains. For example, King Orm (Patrick Wilson) in Aquaman (2018), he was working so hard to be the king of the ocean, literally spent his life to working on it and suddenly, out of nowhere a brother he never knew existed came and stole his throne. That was a pretty good motivation. But Sivana, not really. We didn't get to see how his childhood changed him into a bad guy.

Another thing that I felt disagree was probably 10 minutes before the ending. This movie started with Billy's journey to find himself, the life he always wanted, and his superhero self. But when it came to the time he almost finds himself and his superhero self, it ruined by the decision about his foster siblings. I couldn't give too much, but we've been served with such a funny, good storyline then it vanished with that one decision. For me, this movie should have just focused on Billy and Shazam, nothing else. This movie should give more credits to Billy and Shazam because those both characters were the heart of this movie.

Overall, this movie was such good fun. I enjoyed it more than I expected. Shazam! is a good fresh superhero movie and it came in perfect time while the other superhero movies are so serious right now. I hope DC making more movies like this with thoughtful character development.
