MOVIE | BEAUTIFUL BOY (2018)

"I need to find a way to fill this black hole in me. I still have a family. I want them to be proud of me." - Nic Sheff.

There are so many reasons why I was so excited about the movie. First of all, this movie has some of my favourite actors: Steve Carell, Timothée Chalamet, Amy Ryan, Maura Tierney... I mean, what could be wrong? The Office never wrong, right? Second of all, the book is beautiful. It's so complex and scary at some stages, but it is brilliant!
I was prepared for some heartbreaking moments before watched the movie and yet, still this movie tore me apart as if I wasn't expected at all. There are some parts that I found very triggering - depression, anxiety, drugs addict. I closed my eyes a few times, just to take a break from the movie. To be fair, I'm can't stand seeing needles on the skin and flashing lights. Those things always make me anxious. My movie date was okay with that, thou. So not everyone will be triggered, but just so you know.

This movie is a slow pace one, for those who didn't have the patience to build up the story, or who didn't read the book, this might be a boring movie. But honestly, every scene is important. It relates to one another and they have to be there in order to create this one giant complicated story.

The chemistry between Carell and Chalamet who portrayed the son and father is the most important thing in this movie and gosh, their bond is undeniable! This is not only how to act like family on screen, but this is also about having an emotional connection. Their gesture, their eye contacts, the way they smile to each other, even when they basically did nothing, the bond is there and it is beautiful. I was a little bit worry because I'm a huge fan of the book and didn't want the lack of chemistry ruined my book to screen moment. No offence, I love Carell and Chalamet, but the bond that David and Nic Sheff is like no other. The book is based on true story, the movie has to be authentic, or at least, takes from the original story and both actors are amazingly being so honest. Well done!

Overall, I really love this movie. I have to be honest, I want this movie a bit longer - there are some scenes that left me hanging, but really, this movie is beautiful.

Love, Vera
